Day 8 started at 6am. We ate breakfast in the studio, which included apple bananas, which were WONDERFUL! A very interesting mix of banana/apple flavor. Imagine that! Here is a picture of an apple banana by a regular banana.
We got on the road and looked at South Maui ...
And at West Maui ...
We went to West Maui.
You could see the VOG on the mountains, but it wasn't as bad.
We stopped in Lahaina and parked near the Banyan Tree Park.
Walked around and took some morning pictures.
Walked under the tree, which was the coolest thing ever.
It was early, and the shops were just opening, so there were a lot of deliveries. It was always amazing to me how normal things were always decorated with some sort of Hawaiian object. Like this Meadow Gold truck.
And this Dr. Pepper truck. Viva Hawaii!
Check this out! The Hauola Stone. You can see it at the top of the picture.
And this is a closeup of it. This is where many of the royalty of Maui were born. On the rock. Sounds thrilling. I've always wanted to give birth on a rock in the ocean with crabs crawling around and waves tossing me back and forth.
Surfboards in a convertible ... that would be a good name for a movie.
We grabbed breakfast at the Pioneer Inn. What a cool place, with great Mahi Benedict.
Lots of flowers in Lahaina. Lots of flowers EVERYWHERE!
Vacationers coming in with their morning catch.
So, the COOLEST part of our day and I didn't take any pictures. On the north side of West Maui, we hiked down to the "Two-Tiered Pools". And then we sat in them for hours.
The top pool would fill up when large waves crashed into their rocky face, spilling onto the top. The water would then flow down to a lower pool, making a wall of waterfalls! One good wave could feed the waterfalls for 20-minutes, and it hardly ever didn't have water coming down the surface.
The lower pool was much more of a pool. It was fed by the waterfalls, but also directly by the ocean. The was a rock barrier protecting the pool on all sides except the inland side. Waves would come crashing onto the sandy shore and then circle around into the pool.
Matt called it a nursery for young ocean fish. They were everywhere. We sat in the water, watching the little fish swim around us in pools, and bracing ourselves when the large waves circled into the pool, raising the water level 1-2 feet. We could see the huge waves coming, so it was really crazy how safe we were behind our wall.
We hiked out of here, and drove down to Kihei for dinner at Da Kitchen. Mmmm. Matt got the Hawaii plate again. I got the teriyaki burger, which tasted good, but that meat patty was HUGE! I cut it in half vertically so I could even fit it into my mouth. WOW.
This picture of the inside of our car was pretty typical. I told you I was bathing in sunscreen.
Unfortunately, I didn't get any sunscreen on a 3x3 location on the back of my arm. It got crispy. It made me very happy that I hadn't gotten burned before then on a large scale. That's actually a pretty good place to get burned. The only time it felt uncomfortable was when I showered in warm water.
Another great day! (The Two-Tiered pool was one of our favorites of the entire trip.) Stay tuned for Day 8 and until then you can wonder, "Will the VOG ever leave?"

Great pics, as always! I love hearing about everything. And the bananas are such a great metaphor about how everything is bigger and better in Hawaii. :-)
